Chile & Argentina:Patagonia Experience - South Bound
- Duration: 18 Days
- Start: 13 January 2025
- Price: from US$ 7,495.00 per rider
General information
In a relative (!) short tour PeruMotors shows you windy Patagonia on a guided motorcycle tour. A good mix of nature and fantastic motorcycling over paved and unpaved roads. Every rider wants to go to Patagonia. And so do we !
We provide the motorcycles, hotels, guides, etc. All is taken care of.
Closer to Antarctica you can not go. This is the end of the world. In Chile we ride the “Carretera Austral” and in Argentina the “Ruta 40”, the two most famous roads in South America. We will ride long stretches of paved and unpaved parts of these routes. Of course the un-official capital of Patagonia, San Carlos de Bariloche is on the itinerary. But there is so much more to experience on this tour.

Personal injury and death:
All our motorcycles are insured according to the minimum requirements of the Chilean and Argentinian authorities. This means that the rider, his passenger AND third parties are covered for medical (!) costs.
Nevertheless, PeruMotors strongly advise their guests to obtain a descent health insurance with maximum coverage in Argentina and Chile for the length of this tour. And for repatriation.
Damage to the rental motorcycle and third party property damage:
Included in the package is an insurance which covers damage to the rental motorcycle AND for property damage to third parties, with a deductible/excess of max. US$ 1,200.00.
At the start of the tour the participant must leave a “Security Deposit” of US$ 1,200.00 for the rental motorcycle with a major credit card with sufficient balance.
If you surrender the motorcycle without any damage, we will return the “Security Deposit” directly to you.
If you caused any damage to your rental motorcycle or a third party, this will be settled with the “Security Deposit”.
Please, contact us for more information about this insurance.
Day 1 : Arrival in Villarrica (Chile)
You will arrive in Temuco via Santiago by airplane on day one. When all participants arrived in Villarrica your tour guide will arrange the briefing of the upcoming tour. And he will arrange the necessary paperwork and the “Security Deposit” for the motorcycle with you.
Day 2 : Villarrica - San Martin de los Andes (Argentina)
It is finally time to start our engines on our first riding day. We leave Chile behind us for now, on our way to a small touristic town in Argentina. For the first time during this tour we’ll have to cross te border AND the mighty Andes mountain range.
- Distance: 170 km. (105 mi.)
- Road Surface: All pavement
Day 3: San Martin de los Andes - Bariloche
Finally we are getting closer and closer to the real Patagonia. Heading south on ‘Ruta 40’, this is the famous “Route 66” of Argentina. Spectacular riding and views will be your part. We end up in Bariloche, the ‘un-official’ capital of Patagonia. And a world famous ski resort.
- Distance: 245 km. (150 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mostly pavement
Day 4: Bariloche - Esquel
We are still following the Ruta 40 south bound. Lunch will be in El Bolson. This town is famous for UFO sightings. After lunch we leave the pavement behind and on gravel we go to the “Los Alerces National Park”. After visiting this beautiful park, we ride to Esquel, where we’ll stay the night.
- Distance: 315 km. (195 mi.)
- Road Surface: All pavement
Day 5: Esquel - La Junta (Chile)
Heading for the border again. Just after the town of Trevelin, the road changes into gravel. In Chile the unpaved road continues to Futaleufu, and even further to the ‘Carretera Austral’, the famous southern Chilean highway. In the little town of La Junta we will find our hotel.
- Distance: 220 km. (135 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly gravel / unpaved
Day 6: La Junta - Coyhaique
Further south on the “Carretera Austral”, again a fantastic ride, with spectacular views on the Andes. It seems that it is getting better every day ! Through 2 national parks we ride to Coyhaique, a quiet town in the heart of Chilean Patagonia.
- Distance: 280 km. (175 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly gravel / unpaved
Day 7 & 8: Coyhaique - Puerto Guadal
Todays ride brings us to the shores of Lake Gral. Carrera. This lake is located half in Argentina, half in Chile. Today we stay in Chile, and we will stay in a picturesque lodge, on the shore of the lake.
Day 8 is a resting day, with several options for activities.
- Distance: 310 km. (190 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly gravel / unpaved
Day 9: Puerto Guadal - Gobernador Gregores
One of the longest riding days on the tour. Along the lake shore we ride east bound back to Argentina on a beautiful gravel road. Once in Argentina we continue on Ruta 40 south bound. A connection day crossing the Argentinian ‘Pampa’. A totally deserted region in this country. Maybe you will see some wildlife, like the nandoe or guanaco. We stop for the night near the touristless town of Gobernador Gregores in a authentic estancia (farm).
- Distance: 455 km. (280 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly paved / 80 km. gravel
Day 10 & 11: Gobernador Gregores - El Calafate
Oh yes, we are back in Argentina. And back on the ‘never-ending’ Ruta 40. On our way to quite a touristic town: El Calafate. If the visibility allows, we can see Mount Fitz Roy from the shore of Lago Viedma. Further south we will end up in the touristic town on the shore of Lago Argentino. Here we stay 2 nights.
Now you know why El Calafate is touristic. It is because of the nearby Perito Moreno glacier, part of the largest icefields in the world.
On ‘Day 11’ we go on our motorcycles to the Glaciares National Park and see the glacier for ourselves (160 km. / 100 mi.). You can really hear (!) the glacier moving. This is absolutely one of the most impressive places on earth.
- Distance: 375 km. (235 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly paved / 80 km. gravel
Day 12: El Calafate - Cerro Sombrero (Chile)
One of the longest ridings days of the tour. After 365 kilometers we hit the border with Chile again. And about 55 kilometers further down the road we see the always windy ‘Straits of Magellan’. We will take the ferry to Tierra del Fuego. Once on the island, we follow our route to Cerro Sombrero, where we stay for the night.
- Distance: 470 km. (290 mi.)
- Road Surface: All paved
Day 13 & 14: Cerro Sombrero - Ushuaia (Argentina)
Another long riding day all the way to the southern most city in the world: Ushuaia. Because this city is Argentinian, another border crossing will be our part today.
‘Day 14’ is a day of choice. Or, you can go with your tour guide to the “End of the World”-park on your motorcycle. Or, you want to discover Ushuaia and its surroundings, like a boat trip on the world famous Beagle channel. It is up to you !
- Distance: 425 km. (265 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly paved
Day 15: Ushuaia - Porvenir
We are heading for Chile again. This means the last border crossing on this tour. We stay in the little town of Porvenir, still on the island of Tierra del Fuego.
- Distance: 440 km. (275 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly paved
Day 16: Porvenir - Puerto Natales
Back on board of the ‘Straits of Magellan’ ferry. We are on our way to Puerto Natales, but it is NOT the end of the tour. Hopefully we’ll have tail winds.
- Distance: 290 km. (180 mi.)
- Road Surface: Mainly gravel / unpaved
Day 17: Torres del Paine NP
We will ride mostly on beautiful unpaved roads through the very impressive Torres del Paine National Park. Don’t forget your camera, because the views are really spectacular. One of the many highlights during this tour. In the late afternoon we ride back to Puerto Natales for the night. Here we’ll have to surrender the motorcycles and go for our farewell-dinner.
- Distance: 160 km. (100 mi.)
- Road Surface: Half paved / half unpaved
